While watching the sunrise in Malibu, I looked over my shoulder and saw a caravan of clouds moving west. The sun’s first rays were lighting the sky and drifting clouds ever so softly. The contrast between the two vistas were wildly different and poetic. As my eyes adjusted to the subtle light facing away from the sun, I could still make out the twinkling of a planet
in the new day’s sky.
I painted Pacific Sundown as a companion piece to Morning Drifters. The sketch was started in 2011 during our annual painting trip to the Channel Islands. It is Anacapa Island that is seen in the distance.
