series of four

For the past several years, I have participated in Sullivan Gos’ 100 Grand Exhibition.  This year I painted a series of four 12×12 paintings inspired by the movement of the sun and moon across the sky from various locations.  While Malibu Sunrise and River Sunset are currently hanging in my studio, Santa Rosa Moon and Desert Moon are beingfeatured at Sullivan Gos.

unblushing

While spending many early pre-dawn mornings driving to Malibu, gathering ideas for my submission to the Weisman Museum Exhibition earlier this year, I was mesmerized by this unfolding sunrise.  There was a spectacular display of reflective light bouncing from the neighboring clouds.  The square mass of the main subject defined for me the almost
square dimension of my canvas.

morning drifters & pacific sundown

While watching the sunrise in Malibu, I looked over my shoulder and saw a caravan of clouds moving west. The sun’s first rays were lighting the sky and drifting clouds ever so softly. The contrast between the two vistas were wildly different and poetic. As my eyes adjusted to the subtle light facing away from the sun, I could still make out the twinkling of a planet
in the new day’s sky.

I painted Pacific Sundown as a companion piece to Morning Drifters.  The sketch was started in 2011 during our annual painting trip to the Channel Islands.  It is Anacapa Island that is seen in the distance.

Paintings by the California Art Club
May 19–August 4, 2012 – Open Tuesday – Sunday, 11 AM to 5 PM

This is my first “On Location in Malibu” exhibition with the California Art Club at the Fredrick R. Weisman Museum.  It is the fifth exhibition in a triennial series organized by
Weisman director, Michael Zakian.  The California Art Club just celebrated its 100th anniversary, making it the oldest art organization in the state.  “On Location in Malibu” features works by some of California’s best landscape painters inspired by Malibu’s breathtaking scenery and I am thrilled to be included.
In preparation for the submission and not knowing many areas I settled on two stunning locations, the Malibu Lagoon and Point Dume.

The much-anticipated display of contemporary-traditional fine art, which spotlights sculpture and paintings of genres ranging from pristine California landscapes and seascapes to figures and still-lifes, moves to this revered Los Angeles cultural institution for the first time.  The 101st Annual Gold Medal Exhibition will feature more than 200 representational works of art from renowned traditional fine artists, who have been active in expanding interest in the plein air heritage associated with the organization’s beginnings in 1909.  The club’s founding artists, who were attracted to California from the Midwest and East Coast by the region’s natural beauty and year-round sunshine, gave birth to the artistic movement now referred to as California Impressionism.

100th cac gold medal exhibition

The California Art Club will mark its Centennial anniversary by presenting the “100th Annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibition” at the Pasadena Museum of California Art from April 3 to 24, 2011. The exhibition will coincide with the publication of the 276-page deluxe book “California Light: A Century of Landscapes – Paintings of the California Art Club,” which documents the organization’s first 100 years.  Opening Reception is April 2, 2012.  This year I have three painting being exhibited.  Her Ethereal Veil and Cathedrals of the Sea were created from studies I painted while in the Channel Islands.  Desert Sundown was inspired by a sunset I witnessed in the Mojave Desert.

Remembered by Jennifer Moses / 24×30 / Oil on Canvas Panel

Remembered was inspired from a study I painted on location while visiting a plantation in Louisiana.  The building, dilapidated and falling apart, was not necessarily built to last – but still standing it told a story of long ago that I felt compelled to paint.
